Hannah Smith from Sheffield was awarded a WEST bursary in 2012. The bursary enabled her to do a five day intensive course in bicycle mechanics. She has used her new skills at the COMAC asylum seekers bicycle project.

“By the end of the course I stripped my bike completely, cleaned, serviced and returned every part. I learnt how to use over 20 tools, and how to check for wear and adjust 28 components,” said Hannah.

“I now am planning to get more heavily involved with the COMAC project, and to help with female bike maintenance classes at Sheffield University next year. On a personal level, I can now ride my bike safe in the knowledge that I can fix any problems at the roadside if needs be. I have also been riding with friends who are afraid of cycling to help build their confidence, and servicing their bikes.”

“I’d encourage any woman who wants to learn or develop new skills to apply for this year’s bursary. It’s never too late to learn a new skill, and it can change your life! Thanks WEST for encouraging women to learn and develop outside of our traditional roles, without the limits imposed by society on what we can do.”
