“I spent 20 years in the construction industry as a surveyor and another 20 years in Higher Education working in equality – particularly gender equality – in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and built environment.

When Ros Wall died we wanted to do something active to remember her. She was a real activist so we decided to set up WEST and support a cause dear to Ros’s heart.”

“I undertook a foundation course in engineering at Sheffield College / Sheffield Hallam University, followed by a degree in engineering, and then a postgraduate certificate. I’m now a senior lecturer in mechanical design engineering.

I love developing and inspiring the next generation of engineers and especially keen to see more women becoming engineers, which is why I got involved with WEST.”

“I worked as a mechanic in the AA, taught motor vehicle skills and then managed a project that ran classes in construction skills.

I am passionate about WEST because I believe that learning a trade that is normally done by a man is empowering to women – and helps us work towards a more equal world.”

I have taught furniture making and design for 30 years as well as running my own furniture business. During that time I taught furniture making and joinery to small women-only groups. These groups allowed women to grow in confidence and develop their careers in non-traditional trades. These safe women-only spaces are becoming very reduced in number so I joined WEST as a Trustee because I wanted to help girls and women pursue their careers in non-traditional trades and to encourage more girls into STEM subjects and non-traditional trades.
